Lucky 13 at National Masters in June

After the flawless conditions at the State Championships at Grafton, Rob, Liz and I paid our dues at the Nationals at Perth, where wind, chop and chill were the order of the day.

We flew over to Perth in time to meet the boat trailer, which had arrived via a less congenial route across the Nullarbor. Multiple clubs had collaborated to send a limited selection of boats, to be shared on a roster system; a logistical exercise only marginally less complex than sending a man to the moon. Hats off to Rick Kranen and Liz for masterminding this enterprise; their spreadsheet deserves a spot in the Time Capsule.

Champion Lakes is a far cry from the lushly carpeted rolling hills to which we’ve grown accustomed at SIRC. Perth – or the part of it encapsulating Champion Lakes – is flat. Sandy. Subject to a gnawing grit-laden south-easter in the early morning, that doesn't ease up, but dies miraculously at the close of races. The wind vaults the eastern arm of the lake (practice area) leaving it mirror-still, and barrels squarely onto the buoyed course in the western arm. Libby Hopley, our one-woman cheering squad and support team, eased one tentative leg out of the car, and swiftly withdrew it upon receipt of a sand-blasting. Happily, she later discovered the course pub in which to shelter.

The team soldiered on, mindless of the wind and weather...

Highlights included claiming 5 golds, 14 medals overall and 2 national titles, as well as a very festive Saturday evening’s BBQ (see photo of President Liz, above) – time to catch up with old and new friends from Corio Bay. Lowlights included the Tempest-from-Hell on day 2, when each member of the PMRC team managed to draw the Dreaded Lane 1, second only to the Screaming Sixties in temperature and wave fetch. Liz had to be thawed from near cryostasis after her doubles race, and I may have set an all-time record for smiting every buoy in the lane in my C singles race. Rob failed to win his H single. Nuff said.

Rob and I blazed down the course in our mixed F doubles race, eclipsing the competition, easily one of the most exhilarating races of my short rowing career, to discover on the finish line that we had missed our handicap and were racing against the G's...

It was great to see Manning RC and others from CDRA doing so well. Likewise the State D quad (gold) and the State Women’s Eight (silver)

Rob & Kim celebrate after the event

Grafton Gold

(Apologies in advance for poor photographs. Camera died. Resorted to mobile phone).

You might have been forgiven for doing a double take at seeing Darby and Bob (right) pounding the ergs in late April this year.

The explanation (left) was sitting nearby, enjoying a coffee and keeping a beady eye on the numbers.

An ultimatum had been rendered and the Men’s G Coxless Four had risen to the challenge. Apparently it paid off, as they snared the silver at the Grafton State Masters this year.

They were not the only ones. Carry took the silver medal in her H singles event, and she and Meredith, in a composite PMRC-St George crew, claimed the silver in the Women’s F Quad scull. Carry and longtime St George friendly rival, Helen Vella, placed second in the Women’s G double scull. John Nolan made a surprise appearance in a Manning Eight, and snared a silver.

Then came the golds: Rob added gold medals for Men’s H Singles, Men’s H Doubles and Men’s H Coxless Four to his already impressive heap. Kim defended her D singles title and claimed the C singles as well. Liz and Kim won the Women’s D Doubles. Kim and Graeme won gold for their A&B, and C, mixed doubles. Liz claimed gold for her mixed composite doubles with Murwillumbah and Surfer’s Paradise respectively.

But where was Jim?

Candid camera snapped him enjoying a beer on the balcony of the Crown, surveying the races with a meditative eye. Jim is on a temporary leave of absence from his erstwhile rigorous routine due to a shoulder injury.

The novices also pulled off some impressive crew work. Deb and Al nipped the heels of the place-getters in the Mixed C doubles all the way down the course, pulling off a very creditable fourth. Deb and Al also made fourth place in the mixed A-B doubles.

Silver Medallists Darby
and Rob (the short guy)

Geraldine Haigh and Geraldine Clarke (the "G Forces") joined Pauline, Louise, Brian, Al Wheatland and Tony Chilton in various quad events. They came flying down the course in fine style.

Other close races included fourths for the Men’s F Quad (Mike, Al M,Bob, Tim) and the Women’s E Quad (Meredith and a composite Manning River crew). Al M and Mike were happy with their first in the Men’s E Double heat, Al M with his first in the Men’s E Single heat, and Brian and Graemewith their fourth in the hotly contested Men’s C Doubles heat.
