Duties of an Umpire



The jurisdiction of an Umpire shall extend over the race and all matters connected with it from the time the crews are under the control of the Starter until the coxswains weight has been checked at the finish.

The Umpire;

  • shall be the sole judge of a crews true course during every part of the race.
  • may pass a crew that is considered out of the race.
  • must require a crew about to commit a foul to take remedial action.
  • be aware of the safety and welfare of all competitors.
  • report to the Judge at the end of each race.

Umpires should:
  • be aware of weather and water conditions.
  • keep close communication with the Starter, Referee and other Umpires.
  • assist the Starter by getting crews into their race lanes well before the the start line.
  • allow all crews to perform to their best.
  • have a good understanding of the Laws of Boat Racing.
